Ken Burns introduced his latest series of documentaries earlier this year: National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
The Morning of Creation features the Last Frontier.
In the late 1970s, President Jimmy Carter creates an uproar in Alaska when he sets aside 56 million acres of land for preservation — the largest expansion of protected land in history.
In 1995, wolves are re-established in Yellowstone, making the world’s first national park a little more like what it once was.

New for December: Gates of the Arctic

Alaska’s vast Brooks Range, a landscape of breathtaking vistas and habitats teeming with wildlife and fauna, inspired a national wilderness-protection movement. GATES OF THE ARCTIC visits this seldom-seen natural treasure, one of the wildest and most remote places in North America, and explores the region’s inhabitants, culture and history.
Stunning photography captures unexpected encounters with the region’s diverse animals: arctic terns, caribou, brown bears, songbirds and grebes, among many others. The filmmakers also introduce a compelling cast of local characters, including rural subsistence advocate Jack Reakoff, who mixes fur-trapping and moose-hunting with his day job as a tour guide.
GATES OF THE ARCTIC also explores the importance of unspoiled public lands to civic democracy. Three intertwined journeys of wilderness travelers and former inhabitants of the Brooks Range provide insightful commentary on this topic.

December Encore: Building Alaska

Viewers loved BUILDING ALASKA the first time so we are bringing it back in December.
“It celebrates Alaska’s engineering achievements during the 50th anniversary of statehood. Alaska’s arctic climate, with permafrost, cold and darkness, make it a difficult and expensive place to build. The story of overcoming these obstacles to create engineering masterpieces is the stuff of dramatic and visually spectacular TV.”
- Thursday, December 3. 8:30 – 10:30 p.m.
“The program features interviews with many Alaskans, rare and never before seen footage and photographs, including clips from the thought-to-be-lost Hollywood movie, The Iron Trail, and spectacular high-definition photography.”
“The Program: Building Alaska takes a look at the projects that built Alaska –
* Three great railroads—the White Pass, the Copper River, and the Alaska—that helped extract natural resources and transform Alaska into a place where people could live;
* Alaska’s roads, the Richardson and Parks Highways, which were carved from the wilderness and which, once paved and modernized, got Alaska “out of the mud”;
* Future projects on the drawing board such as a natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay and the Knik Arm Bridge in Anchorage.”
