Anchorage Edition: August 24, 2007
Fri, August 24, 2007
Host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska.
- Representative Mike Kelly (R-Fairbanks) has called on Senator Ted Stevens, Representative Don Young and others to resign.
- Anchorage Assemblyman Dan Sullivan wants to change the way Anchorage officials are elected.
- The new oil tax the Legislature instituted last year will bring in some $800 million less than predicted.
- Florida officials don’t want the $10 million Congressman Don Young appropriated for Coconut Road near Fort Myers.
- Todd Palin, Governor Sarah Palin’s husband, returns to work for BP. This inevitably raises the question of conflict of interest.
- The last hurrah of the Murkowski jet.
Cities of Light repeating Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
Thu, August 23, 2007
Many of our cable viewers experienced a picture freeze (though the sound continued) during last night’s airing of Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain. We’ve traced the trouble back to the cable operator, but of course that doesn’t help folks that missed portions of the program.
If you’d like to see the program again (or at least without an impaired picture), tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for the rebroadcast.
And if you really like the program, you can preorder a DVD copy through the PBS Store (scheduled for release September 14).
Satellite services restored
Tue, August 21, 2007
The satellite distribution outage that took some KAKM programs off the air remote parts of the state has been resolved. Repair of the “ARCS” system should restore distribution of KAKM’s Alaska Weather to the remote parts of the state this evening at 5:30 p.m., and broadcast TV services in many bush parts of the state should also be back.
Here’s the message we received from APBI technical support at 3:47 p.m. today:
Satellite delivery for ARCS, Alaska One, 360 North (Gavel to Gavel) and UATV has resumed. Engineers and technicians in Fairbanks were able to identify and solve the path interruption. From the monitor point in Anchorage, all video and audio services in the multiplex appear to be working correctly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
THE WAR: Stories from Juneau

As part of airing THE WAR (starting September 23), KAKM will air three World War II veterans’ stories produced by PBS station KTOO in Juneau. The stories will air Saturday, September 29 starting at 7:00 p.m.

Harold Wheaton recalls unloading ships on the Aleutian Islands, with cargo including fuel and bombs for bombers that would fly to Japan. Harold Wheaton was interviewed in his home in Juneau on May 23, 2007. (Airs Saturday, 9/29 at 7:30 p.m.)

You can learn more about each of these stories at the KTOO web site. You can even find out how to submit your own story to PBS’ national project.
You can also honor the service of family and friends that served in World War II by recording a testimonial at KAKM in Anchorage.
