John Denver: A Song’s Best Friend

This special celebrates the late singer/songwriter’s legacy of classic performances and includes his popular 1970s television specials plus rare footage from his Sing Australia! (1984 and 1994) and Red Rocks concerts (1973 and 1982), as well as interviews with the people closest to him-ex-wife Annie, producer and arranger Milt Okun, manager Hai Thau, conductor and composer Lee Holdridge, and band members Pete huttlinger and John Somers among them. Songs performed include “Sunshine on my Shoulders,” “Country Roads,” “Annie’s Song,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and “Rocky Mountain High.”

In the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, the government’s claims about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein went mostly unchallenged by the media. Four years after “shock and awe,” how the government sold the war has been much examined, but a big question reaming: how and why did the press buy it? In this program, Bill Moyers and his team piece together the reporting that shows how the media were complicit in shaping the “public mind” toward the war, and ask what’s happened to the press’s ole as skeptical “watchdog” over government power.
