MASTERPIECE THEATRE wraps up the Jane Austen series with “Sense and Sensibility” on Sunday, April 6 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m., followed with the MASTERPIECE CLASSIC series beginning Sunday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m. NATURE kicks off the season with “What Females Want and What Males Will Do” on Sunday, April 6 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Programs of note in April include two key PBS programs for spring:

A generation ago, Jacques-Yves Cousteau revealed the oceans’ mysteries to millions of landlocked PBS television viewers and inspired a groundswell of public awareness of the unique problems faced by the world’s marine environments. Now, 30 years later, Jacques’ son Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team of “oceanauts”have set sail to explore dangerous and spectacular locales across the globe.

CARRIER, a 10-part series filmed aboard the USS Nimitz , is a character-driven immersion in the high-stakes world of a nuclear aircraft carrier. Pictured: Sailors “manning the rails” aboard the USS Nimitz.

CARING FOR YOUR PARENTS
Wednesday, April 2, 8:00-10:00 p.m.
As the population ages, many adults are grappling with an unprecedented social, cultural, economic and personal revolution as they become the primary caregivers for their aging parents. This documentary draws much-needed attention to this widespread reality through an intimate look at five American families. Immediately after the 90-minute broadcast, former NBC medical correspondent Dr. Art Ulene leads “A Conversation About Caring,” a half-hour panel discussion that offers concrete advice and guidance on how to start the conversation - often the most difficult step in caregiving.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: Walt Whitman
Monday, April 14, 8:00-10:00 p.m.
Today he is one of the most-recognized figures in American literary history: poet, patriot and faithful advocate of democracy. But in his own time, critics denounced Walt Whitman as a “lunatic raving in pitiable delirium.” This documentary from filmmaker Mark Zwonitzer (”Jesse James,” “The Massie Affair”) reflects upon the life, work and enduring influence of America’s first great poet.

ANYONE & EVERYONE ALASKA
Thursday, April 17, 9:00-9:30 p.m.
In Anyone and Everyone, parents across the U. S. discuss their reactions to having a son or daughter reveal they are gay. Despite the diversity of the families’ ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, geographic and religious backgrounds, there is a thread connecting these stories. The bond between parent and child provides the strength and inspiration to work through the challenges. ANYONE AND EVERYONE ALASKA, produced by KTOO-TV Juneau, is the broadcast portion of an outreach project resulting in an in-studio discussion with an audience and a panel representing community members, school groups, religious leaders, health care providers and counselors discussing the issues which the documentary has brought to light from a local perspective.

NOVA: Car of the Future

Tom and Ray Magliozzi of NPR’s “Car Talk” fame take viewers on a roller-coaster ride into the world of cars as NOVA takes a look at the latest and greatest in the automotive industry.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S STRANGE DAY
Wednesday, April 23, 8:00-10:00 p.m.
Many of us are finally paying attention to the earth and the impact our lives have on the environment, but how many of us truly understand the dire circumstances surrounding our planet’s water? The newest installment in the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S STRANGE DAYS ON PLANET EARTH series shines the spotlight on both fresh and salt water with the aim of broadening awareness and deepening our understanding of these complex issues, while inspiring us all to learn more and take action. Edward Norton hosts.
