Yes, I wonder why we don’t get “Nature” in light of the advanced information regarding “The Deep Jungle” series and instead have to see the Osmond Family re-union, repeatedly? Pre-empting the series that we’ve grown to enjoy and to count on in favor of these “specials” is not always in the best interest of the long time viewer, in my opinion. Thank you,

Thanks for the question Steve. It’s one I receive every pledge drive period (which typically occurs in March, June, September and December.) KAKM relies on special programming periods to generate funding for the station. Because more than 70% of our funding is generated locally, it is critical to our success. We receive less than 4% state government funding and about 20% federal government funding. We’ve tried raising money around the “regular schedule,” but aren’t as successful as when we pledge the specials. Compounding the problem is the advanced on-air promotion that you mentioned. At one time, we had staff capacity to build our schedule 24/7, including those program promos. Since September 2006, when we experienced our latest round of cutbacks, we began offering the PBS West Coast feed — a stream of programming that comes to us complete with break material already embedded. This is why, with the exception of pledge periods, you’ll see promos that say “coming soon” instead of “Sunday night at 7.” With the few people who remain here at KAKM, we are able to remove only some of that feed content and replace it with our own content–mostly local programming, underwriting spots and fundraising programming. There is one bright spot though, and that is the overnight schedule. If you are a cable subscriber, or have a digital TV and are able to receive KAKM’s HD and SD signals, you should know that the prime time schedule, including NATURE, repeats overnight. DEEP JUNGLE: THE BEAST WITHIN for example repeats on Tuesday, March 18 at 4:00am. (You can do a search for programs in our TV Schedule module online which will give you the time/date of airdates.) Of course, you’ll likely need a way to record this at that hour! I do understand the frustration about program changes, so know that we don’t make them lightly. We need to raise money to be able to provide the great public broadcasting service to you the rest of year.
