Each week, host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska. Topics this week include:
- Sarah Palin as VP choice for Republican party and all the reaction from our neighbors in Alaska as well as friends across the country
- Stock market reacted to the Republican choice of VP
- Dirt diggers from the national media are in Alaska, seeking anything salacious — or even relevant — related to the Palin family
- Did the McCain campaign fully “vet” Sarah Palin before announcing their selection
- The Palin / Monegan / Wooten investigation has stalled out as targeted witnesses are choosing to avoid speaking on the record
- Palin’s stance on earmarks — especially over the “Bridge to Nowhere” — comes under national scrutiny and, depending on the political camp, ridicule
- Has Palin actually achieved all the goals she’s purported to have achieved?
- Palin comes under scrutiny for leading a “527 group” that supported Senator Ted Stevens in the past
- The Don Young / Sean Parnell competition for the right to run for Alaska’s sole U.S. House seat remains undecided, pending a Division of Elections decision
- Will Palin’s appearance on the Republican ticket drive higher Republican voting rates in November, thus putting Don Young into office, despite Palin’s disputes with him?

Tonight, Tim Bradner, at the close of the show, said to the effect that he hoped all the journalists currently in Alaska didn’t uncover something embarassing to Sarah Palin and the State. Isn’t he a journalist? Isn’t it a journalist’s role to inform? Seems he’s just a part of the problem. For years I have been dissapointed in the lack of effective in-State journalism related to political issues. Thank goodness for OUTSIDE crimilan investigators and journalists. Alaska politics needs this trial by fire. I hope they uncover everything embarassing to Sarah Palin, and the State. After all, John McCain and the Republican Party believes she is the second best person in the country to be President of the United States. I’d like know a heck of a lot more about the woman who just might have to become President.
Note to Mr. Roger Miller:
Do you truly believe contemporary journalists are without fault or bias ? I sympathise with your wish for better information about Sarah Palin’s policies, though I don’t give a rap about what brand of soap she uses to do the family laundry. As a Canadian, it matters a great deal to me that she is human, with human foibles like us, and has never read Machiavelli or Karl Marx.
The reason a Canadian cares about who is elected as president is that our elected officials like to imitate all the American vices but none of your virtues.
Cordially,
Paul Fournier
