Anchorage Edition: November 21, 2008
Fri, November 21, 2008
Each week, host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska. Topics this week include:
- Ted Stevens defeated by Mark Begich for U.S. Senate seat; offers departing remarks on the floor of the U.S. Senate — on his 85th birthday
- What kinds of help will Mark Begich need as part of the transition from Stevens to Begich in the Senate?
- Anchorage mayor’s office will soon be open (aside from the acting mayor: the chair of the Assembly); election for mayor will come up in April
- What were your favorite Ted Stevens earmarks over the years?
- What happens next to Alaska with the loss of Stevens and falling oil prices?
- Alaska’s budget depends upon $85 oil. Will Palin wield a big cost-cutting axe this coming year?
- Who will be the key players in the State Senate, in terms of dealing with the budget?
- We have a new President coming into office soon; how will he treat Alaska and Governor Palin?
- Tony Knowles’ name has been batted around as a possible Obama administration appointment, possibly for the Department of the Interior
- If Knowles goes to the Interior, how would it affect tribal entities and corporations in Alaska?

Anchorage Edition: November 14, 2008
Fri, November 14, 2008
Each week, host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska. Topics this week include:
- Mark Begich rallying a come-from-behind vote counting drama for the U.S. Senate seat. (Begich ahead by 814 at taping, 1,061 at posting, latest results here); voting continues into next week
- Recount process getting scrutiny in the press, seems to be going to plan
- Some close legislative races still in play in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
- Looks like the legislature will lead from an informal coalition due to shifting party power math.
- Bill Weimer — former leader of the private prison movement in Alaska — had his trial come to an end this week with a conviction on corruption charges. Panelists remember the arc of Weimer’s activities in Alaska.
- Price of oil continues to head down; how long before the Alaska budget craters?
- American economy is slowing down in a big way. What happens in Alaska? Will major construction projects be stalled or canceled?
- Sarah Palin remains in the national spotlight, appearing on TV and at the Republic Governor’s meeting in Miami. Is she running for President? Senate?
- Will Palin have to “stir the pot” in 2009 to keep the gas line project moving?
- Palin, as Governor, not candidate, will have to focus on governing, with a budget in peril and a stated desire to deal with some healthcare issues.

Anchorage Edition: November 7, 2008
Fri, November 7, 2008
Each week, host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska. Topics this week include:
- Obama elected president, though not in the Alaskan vote; what impact did Palin have on McCain’s collection of votes in the state?
- Why were voter numbers apparently depressed in Alaska this election? Was it the lack of ballot initiatives? Was it post-corruption disaffection? Was the election decided before Alaskans had a chance to vote?
- North Pole numbers — McCain beat Obama 4-to-1; but a sizable number of these conservatives broke for Begich and Bird over Stevens
- How did Palin perform as a VP candidate on the national stage?
- What awaits Palin as Governor?
- Is there a future for Palin on the national stage? What does she have to do to be taken seriously on the national stage, going forward?
- Stevens / Begich still undecided in a close race to be finalized by some 74,000 ballots yet to be counted
- Will the Senate move to expel Stevens before the end of the year?
- State politicians that ethically falter are savaged, but Stevens looks to be reelected despite conviction
- Do Alaskans care about political corruption?
- Don Young has apparently been reelected; more votes to be counted, but it looks grim for Berkowitz
- How or why was the polling in Alaska so far off on key statewide races?
- Alaska legislative races roundup; House will be strongly Republican; Senate looks to be split pretty evenly between the parties; some races still undecided
- How is Alaska the same as or different from the rest of the country?
