KAKM SPECIALS – Fillmore: The Last Days; Playing for Change
Fri, August 28, 2009
Fillmore: The Last Days
Originally released in 1972 and long out-of-print, the documentary film making its PBS debut.
The Fillmore West, a storied San Francisco venue, has become an institution, an integral part of the West Coast music scene of the ‘60s and, now, an essential element of the mythology of rock ‘n’ roll. Legendary rock impresario Bill Graham closed the Fillmore West in early summer 1971 with five nights of all-star concerts, the last curtain going down on July 4.
Always the showman, Graham made sure the Fillmore West was sent off in a blaze of glory, spotlighting bands – including the Grateful Dead and Santana – that rose to fame at the hall. The madness leading up to the shows and the concerts themselves were filmed for the Last Days of the Fillmore, a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at a fascinating moment in rock history and a showcase for great performances by iconic artists who epitomized “the San Francisco Sound.”

Playing for Change
Playing For Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The project began a decade ago, the brainchild of Grammy-winning music producer and engineer Mark Johnson. For ten years, Johnson and his team traveled the globe to record little-known musicians.
The name “Playing For Change” evokes the coins thrown to street musicians as well as the transformation their music inspires. The team traveled to five continents to find and record unique and talented musicians. Locales include New Orleans, LA; Johannesburg, South Africa; Tel Aviv, Israel; Omagh, Ireland; Chennai, India; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Moscow, Russia; Kathmandu, Nepal; and many others.
- Tuesday, September 1 at 8:30 pm w/ local community guests.
- Saturday, September 5 at 9:00 pm featuring interviews with the creator and director.
The Thank You Gift:
- $75 CD/DVD of the “Playing for Change” project documentary.
