PREMIERE: BUILDING ALASKA

Building Alaska celebrates Alaska’s engineering achievements during the 50th anniversary of statehood. Alaska’s arctic climate, with permafrost, cold and darkness, make it a difficult and expensive place to build. The story of overcoming these obstacles to create engineering masterpieces is the stuff of dramatic and visually spectacular TV.”

“The ninety-minute program features interviews with many Alaskans, rare and never before seen footage and photographs, including clips from the thought-to-be-lost Hollywood movie, The Iron Trail, and spectacular high-definition photography.”

“The Program: Building Alaska takes a look at the projects that built Alaska:

* Three great railroads—the White Pass, the Copper River, and the Alaska—that helped extract natural resources and transform Alaska into a place where people could live;

* Alaska’s roads, the Richardson and Parks Highways, which were carved from the wilderness and which, once paved and modernized, got Alaska “out of the mud”;

* Future projects on the drawing board such as a natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay and the Knik Arm Bridge in Anchorage.”

    I watched the program Building Alaska and was very impressed. Is it possible to see the movie Building Alaska that aired on Tuesday Nov. 3rd on your web site? There are parts we would like to see again and also be able to stop the movie to get a better look at different photos. Especially the part about the building of the Highway. We came up in 1951 and we had to be pulled out of the mud and one of the pictures sure does look like our old pick up. Thanks Roger Tachick, Soldotna

    I watched part of this special on Nov. 3rd and would like to see the rest of it. Will you be airing it again and if so when?
    I could watch it a few times and still not learn it all. What I saw was very good and extremely interesting.
    I might add that I am 44 year resident having lived in Fairbanks and currently in Anchorage.
    Thanks for a well produces bit of history.

    I just watched your wonderful documentary ‘Building Alaska’ on Phoenix Public Television. WOW, what a well produced, concise, and informative piece of work! Terrific, to cover so many important events, with such beautiful and well edited video! This is -BY FAR- the best program I’ve ever seen about Alaska, and I’ve seen most of them! Will tell my Alaskan friends about it, especially David Schwantes of Anchorage Philatelic, Iditarod, and NEA-Retired, ‘Teacher of the Year’ fame. I truly hope it becomes available on DVD! Fantastic!
