Brain Fitness Frontiers
Wed, November 25, 2009
In the third program in our Brain Fitness Trilogy, as we look at the frontiers of brain neuroscience and plasticity and how the brain is basically an organ that is built to change. Given the right set of circumstances, the right exercises and the right “mindful” hard work, what the brain can learn and do is truly amazing.
In this program we look once again at the London cab drivers and what happens to their brains once they begin to learn “the Knowledge,” the impact of virtual reality in changing memories and dealing with pain, the ability of the brain to interface with mechanical and electronic instruments in such a way that the brain can control them without any interface by the human body.
With interviews at Case Western University in Cleveland, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Columbia University in New York, MIT and Harvard in Boston and The Universities of California at Berkeley and San Francisco we take our audience into the laboratories to see some of the most exciting neurological experimentation and implementation yet seen.

New for December: Gates of the Arctic
Mon, November 23, 2009
Alaska’s vast Brooks Range, a landscape of breathtaking vistas and habitats teeming with wildlife and fauna, inspired a national wilderness-protection movement. GATES OF THE ARCTIC visits this seldom-seen natural treasure, one of the wildest and most remote places in North America, and explores the region’s inhabitants, culture and history.
Stunning photography captures unexpected encounters with the region’s diverse animals: arctic terns, caribou, brown bears, songbirds and grebes, among many others. The filmmakers also introduce a compelling cast of local characters, including rural subsistence advocate Jack Reakoff, who mixes fur-trapping and moose-hunting with his day job as a tour guide.
GATES OF THE ARCTIC also explores the importance of unspoiled public lands to civic democracy. Three intertwined journeys of wilderness travelers and former inhabitants of the Brooks Range provide insightful commentary on this topic.
