Alaska Baseball: Long Flies and Late Sunsets

With roots in the days before the playing of the first Midnight Sun game in 1906 the Alaska Baseball League has been adding to Alaska’s (and indeed America’s) cultural and historical legacy, defined as much by its Alaskan existence as by its exceptionally high quality baseball.
Many greats like Tom Seaver, Dave Winfield, Mark McGwire, and Randy Johnson have spent summers in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kenai on their road to the Major Leagues, often thriving, sometimes just enduring, MLB Hall of Famers and journeymen alike have played in the annual Midnight Sun Game.

Editor in chief Chris Johns takes a list of hundreds of exceptional photos and whittles it down to just 10. The program tells the stories behind those photographs and includes interviews with the dedicated, adventurous photographers who get the one-in-a-million shot that makes it into the magazine.

NOVA: The Pluto Files

When the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium stopped calling Pluto a planet, director Neil deGrasse Tyson found himself at the center of a firestorm led by angry, Pluto-loving elementary school students who wrote letters like the one above. But what is it about this cold, distant, icy rock that captures so many hearts? Now, almost 10 years after the news broke on the front page of The New York Times, “Pluto Not a Planet? Only in New York,” and nearly four years after the IAU (International Astronomical Union) officially reclassified the ninth planet as a plutoid, NOVA travels cross-country with Tyson to find out.

During this episode of Faces of America Henry Louis Gates, Jr. tells the story of the peopling of the New World, how land came to define the settling and identity of America and how the guests’ ancestors were part of this history.
Viewers learn of Meryl Streep’s eighth great-grandfather who fought in Metacom’s War; records of a land dispute in Spain that forced Eva Longoria’s ancestors to leave for the New World in 1603; and Yo-Yo Ma’s Chinese genealogy, which gives insights into the identity that Ma has longed for his whole life.
