“A major investigation by Washington Post reporters Dana Priest and William Arkin is the subject of an upcoming hour-long FRONTLINE documentary to air in October on PBS, produced by veteran FRONTLINE producer Michael Kirk.

The Post’s two-year investigation looks at the top secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001—a world that has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or how many agencies duplicate work being done elsewhere.

Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on Top Secret programs related to counter-terrorism, homeland security, and intelligence at over 10,000 locations across the country. Over 850,000 Americans have Top Secret clearances.
Redundancy and overlap are major problems and a symptom of the ongoing lack of coordination between agencies.
In the Washington area alone, 33 building complexes for Top Secret work are under construction or have been built since September 2001.

This is the first and most comprehensive examination of the complex system. It was reported by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Dana Priest and author, researcher, and military expert William M. Arkin.

The findings are based on hundreds of interviews with current and former military and intelligence officials and public records.

Nearly two dozen journalists worked on the investigation, including investigative reporters, cartography experts, database reporters, video journalists, researchers, interactive graphic designers, digital designers, graphic designers, and graphics editors at The Washington Post.”

APTI Member Night at the Ballpark

On July 8, 2010, KAKM hosted a member night at the ballpark during the Anchorage Glacier Pilots versus the Anchorage Bucs game at the Mulcahy Stadium.

APTI also recognized the long-time dedication of a special volunteer – Marvell Johnson, for over 30 years of service. Johnson is the host of KSKA’s “Soul to Soul” music show.

Fans and members alike were given a chance to win prizes and got to watch the KAKM Puffin race the Glacier Pilots’, “Piper” the moose race around the bases.

Supporters also put their names down for a chance to win a pair of tickets to Red Green when he visits Anchorage this fall.

Behind-the-Scenes of Paddle to Seattle on KAKM

As a way to thank our many members, supporters and volunteers, KAKM has put together a small, behind-the-scenes look at how a night of pledge week looks from beyond what is seen on television.

During this pledge drive, we were able to bring up Josh Thomas, a co-producer and co-star of the epic kayak voyage-turned-documentary, Paddle to Seattle.

KAKM, Channel 7 was the home of Paddle to Seattle’s national television premiere, which was June 8.

Thanks to the efforts and contributions of our members, supporters, volunteers and staff, KAKM is able to bring you special programming like Paddle to Seattle, and much more, to your homes.

Diane Benson and Allan Hayton, who portray Elizabeth and Roy Peratrovich, star in For the Rights of All – Ending Jim Crow in Alaska.

A film about Alaska Civil Rights will make its state debut at the Alaska Federation of Natives convention in Anchorage. “For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska” is a one-hour documentary profiling the struggle for Alaska Native Rights.

Airing on KAKM, Channel 7 – December 1 at 8 p.m.
