The image of the Pioneer Peak with Colony Barn & Silo was chosen to highlight KAKM’s service to the Mat-Su valleys.

The idea of the “pioneer” is especially important during our 35th Anniversary – as we reflect upon our past, and look toward an exciting future. It was designed by well-known Alaskan artist, Marianne Wieland.

Marianne came to Alaska in 1949 with her father, Buell A. Nesbett, Alaska first supreme court chief justice. She studied art at the University of Alaska, California College of Arts and Crafts, and San Francisco State College, receiving degrees in Fine Arts and Science.

Arctic themes pervade Marianne’s work – visual impressions of the far north, honed to their essential elements. Her style captures a sense of Alaska’s vast landscape and unique inhabitants through archetypal forms.

This mug marks the 20th Anniversary of Marianne Wieland designed KAKM etched coffee mugs.

Celtic Woman vocalists Lisa Kelly, Chloe Agnew, Lynn Hilary and Alex Sharpe, with violinist Mairead Nesbitt, perform at Ireland’s historic Powerscourt House and Gardens in Enniskerry, County Wicklow.

The musical repertoire ranges from spirited Celtic fiddle and bodhran pieces to lush arrangements of Irish classics, contemporary covers and original compositions.

In addition to the six-piece band, the Aontas Choir, a film orchestra, the Discovery Gospel Choir, the Extreme Rhythm Drummers and a bagpipe ensemble join Celtic Woman for this event.

Filmed in October 2009 at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, this concert is a celebration of Rounder Records’ 40 years in the music industry and features Grammy® winning Rounder artists:

• Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bela Fleck and Irma Thomas along with musical host Minnie Driver and special guests Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas and jazz/R&B pianist Henry Butler.

The special also includes select performances from Steve Martin’s show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, from Alison Krauss and Robert Plant’s 2008 CMT “Crossroads” special and from Madeleine Peyroux’s 2009 concert in Los Angeles.

When the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium stopped calling Pluto a planet, director Neil deGrasse Tyson found himself at the center of a firestorm led by angry, Pluto-loving elementary school students who wrote letters like the one above. But what is it about this cold, distant, icy rock that captures so many hearts? Now, almost 10 years after the news broke on the front page of The New York Times, “Pluto Not a Planet? Only in New York,” and nearly four years after the IAU (International Astronomical Union) officially reclassified the ninth planet as a plutoid, NOVA travels cross-country with Tyson to find out.
